Practical ISO guidance
ISO certification costs: what should you budget for?
Your budget should cover the work needed to prepare your business, the independent certification assessment and the ongoing work to maintain your system. A useful quote starts with a clear scope.

Three parts of your budget
| Budget area | What to include |
|---|---|
| Preparation | Your team’s time, consultancy if needed, training and any changes to processes or controls. |
| Independent certification | The certification body’s assessment charges, applicable travel and any follow-up work. |
| Maintaining the system | Internal audits, reviews, improvements, ongoing support and future certification-body assessments. |
What changes the amount of work?
Two businesses with the same headcount can need different support. Prepare a short brief covering the standard, products or services, number of sites, workforce, existing procedures and your customer’s requirement.
Tell us whether you already hold certification, need a first certificate or want to add another standard. An established system may provide a useful starting point, but its suitability still needs checking.
Compare the scope as well as the price
- Check which activities, sites and standards each quote covers.
- Ask what consultancy deliverables are included and what your team must complete.
- Identify separate certification charges, travel, taxes and possible follow-up fees.
- Understand the ongoing commitment and the terms for changing or cancelling work.
Use the same brief for each provider so that differences are easier to understand. ISO develops standards; independent certification bodies perform certification. Consultancy and certification therefore need clear, separate scopes.
Get a quote based on your starting point
A gap analysis can help identify the preparation required. If you already have an established system, discuss a focused internal audit or ongoing support.
We agree our consultancy scope around your business. Ask the independent certification body to confirm its own fees and assessment arrangements.
