Practical ISO guidance
Combining ISO standards in one management system
An integrated management system brings shared activities together while retaining the requirements of each standard. It can help your team use one coordinated approach to quality, environmental and health and safety management.

What can be coordinated?
Many ISO management-system standards share a harmonised structure and common terminology. This supports a combined system, although the detailed requirements still need to be addressed.
| Shared activity | A practical approach |
|---|---|
| Document control | One clear method for approving, updating and finding documents. |
| Audit planning | A coordinated programme that covers the requirements of each standard. |
| Management review | A planned review with relevant information and decisions for each discipline. |
| Corrective action | A shared way to record causes, responsibilities, actions and effectiveness checks. |
Keep the specific risks visible
Integration should not obscure what each standard is for. ISO 9001 addresses quality management; ISO 14001 focuses on environmental management; and ISO 45001 addresses occupational health and safety.
Build the shared processes around your operations, while retaining the distinct assessments, controls and evidence each area needs.
Start with the system you already use
Map current processes and identify where teams repeat the same work. Agree what can be combined, who owns each activity and which requirements need separate attention.
A gap analysis can compare the existing system with the additional standard. Plan training and internal audits around the resulting changes.
Discuss certification arrangements separately
Ask the certification body how it would assess the combined scope and what evidence it needs. Integration does not automatically guarantee fewer audit days or a particular saving.
Our consultancy can help coordinate preparation, implementation and ongoing support. The independent certification body determines its assessment arrangements and certification decisions.
