Practical ISO guidance
How long does ISO certification take?
There is no single timetable that fits every business. Your existing system, the evidence available, the work required and the certification body’s availability all affect the route to certification.

1. Establish the starting point
Confirm the exact standard and scope required by your customer or contract. Review your current processes, responsibilities and records before committing to an assessment date.
A gap analysis helps turn an unfamiliar requirement into a practical list of actions. Assign an owner and a realistic completion date to each action.
2. Put the system into everyday use
Allow time for your team to use the processes and collect evidence that they work. Preparing documents is only one part of implementation.
Build the plan around staff availability, operational changes, training and any work involving suppliers or other sites. Regular progress reviews help identify dependencies before they affect the timetable.
3. Review readiness
Plan your internal audits and management review. Address findings and check that corrective actions work. These activities help reveal issues before the independent assessment.
If a deadline is approaching, explain it at the outset. We can discuss priorities and readiness; the external certification decision remains with the certification body.
4. Coordinate the independent assessment
Speak to your chosen certification body early about its assessment stages, booking availability, evidence expectations and process for closing findings. Its assessment plan and certification decision are separate from consultancy.
- Confirm who must be available for the assessment.
- Check whether all sites and activities are covered.
- Allow for follow-up actions where required.
- Keep customers informed if their requested date depends on an external decision.
Keep the system working afterwards
Certification is a milestone in an ongoing management system. Plan the internal work and subsequent independent assessments with the relevant providers. Monthly consultancy can help you keep responsibilities, reviews and improvements moving.
