The changes that matter

What is different in ISO 9001:2026?

The new edition builds on the existing quality management framework. Leadership, quality culture and the treatment of risks and opportunities receive particular attention. Established processes provide a useful starting point for your review.

Leadership & quality culture

Greater emphasis on leadership’s role in quality culture and ethical behaviour. Review how managers set expectations and support people in making quality decisions.

Policy & business direction

The quality policy’s connection to organisational context and strategic direction is clearer. Check that your policy still reflects your business priorities.

Risks & opportunities

The distinction between addressing risks and pursuing opportunities is clearer. Consider whether your planning identifies both, with actions and accountable owners.

People & awareness

Awareness gives more attention to quality culture and ethical behaviour. Check how your teams understand their contribution to the management system.

Clearer guidance

Annex A explains concepts and the intent of requirements. Use the published standard and its guidance to inform your gap review.

Continuity & climate

Customer focus, the process approach and continual improvement remain central. Climate-change considerations introduced in the 2024 amendment carry forward.

Build your transition plan

Six practical steps to prepare.

30 September 2029

The ISO technical committee says existing ISO 9001:2015 organisations have until 30 September 2029 to complete transition. Assessment may be combined with surveillance or recertification, or arranged separately. Confirm the route and timing with your certification body.

The steps alongside are our suggested preparation sequence. Your certification body determines the assessment and certification decision.

  1. Agree your assessment route

Ask your certification body when it can assess against the 2026 edition, what evidence it expects and whether transition can fit your surveillance or recertification audit.

Your output: An agreed assessment date and scope.

  2. Compare your QMS with the new edition

Work through the published requirements against your current processes. Record each gap, its owner and the evidence needed to close it.

Your output: A prioritised gap-analysis action list.

  3. Update the way you work

Review policy, planning, leadership arrangements and staff awareness. Make targeted changes and brief the people who will use them.

Your output: Updated processes with clear responsibilities.

  4. Build evidence through normal operations

Put revised arrangements into use. Gather useful examples from customer issues, process performance, improvement decisions and team briefings.

Your output: Evidence that the changes work in practice.

  5. Audit and review readiness

Include the changed requirements in internal audits and management review. Resolve gaps and check that corrective actions have worked.

Your output: A readiness review with outstanding actions tracked.

  6. Complete the transition assessment

Attend the agreed assessment, respond to findings and allow time for the certification body’s decision before the transition deadline.

Your output: Confirmation of the certification decision.

Useful answers

ISO 9001:2026 questions, answered.

Has ISO 9001:2026 been published?

Yes. ISO published the new edition on 16 September 2026. This guide covers the published edition rather than a draft.

Does publication immediately invalidate our 2015 certificate?

Publication is not an instruction to stop maintaining your existing system. There is a transition period. Continue meeting your certification obligations and confirm the status, expiry and transition plan for your certificate with your certification body.

Do we need to rewrite every procedure?

Start with a gap analysis. Keep effective arrangements and change what the comparison shows is necessary. The amount of work depends on your current system and how it operates.

Can we coordinate this with ISO 14001:2026?

Yes, shared activities can be planned together. Keep separate requirements, evidence and deadlines visible: the ISO 14001 client-transition deadline is earlier. Read our ISO 14001:2026 guide below.
