The changes that matter
What is different in ISO 14001:2026?
The revised edition retains the environmental management framework while clarifying expectations. It connects environmental conditions, business decisions and performance more explicitly, with practical implications for planning, operational control and review.
Environmental context
A broader view of environmental conditions includes climate change, pollution, resource availability, biodiversity and ecosystem health. Revisit which conditions affect your organisation.
Leadership & results
Leadership accountability and the connection between objectives and measurable environmental performance are reinforced. Review who owns decisions and how progress is demonstrated.
Risks & planned changes
Planning is clarified, including a structured approach to managing change in Clause 6.3. Check how environmental considerations enter decisions about new activities or processes.
External providers
Expectations extend to externally provided processes, products and services. Review the environmental controls relevant to suppliers and contractors.
Audit & management review
Audit programmes, objectives and management review receive clearer structure. Check that your review arrangements test the system and support decisions.
Interpretation & life cycle
Enhanced guidance helps explain concepts and the life-cycle perspective. Use it to check how your activities, purchasing and downstream impacts are considered.

Build your transition plan
Six practical steps to prepare.
30 April 2029UKAS states that certification bodies have until 30 April 2029 to transition their certified customers. This is the client-transition end date, not a suggested audit booking date. Agree your own assessment and decision timetable with your certification body.
The steps alongside are our suggested preparation sequence. Your certification body determines the assessment and certification decision.

ISO 14001:2026 questions, answered.
When was ISO 14001:2026 published?
ISO published the new edition on 15 April 2026. It replaces the 2015 edition of the standard.
What is the ISO 14001:2026 transition deadline?
UKAS gives 30 April 2029 as the deadline for certification bodies to transition their certified customers. Your assessment and any corrective actions need to leave enough time for completion. Confirm your specific arrangements with your certification body.
Do we need to start our environmental system again?
Begin by checking your existing EMS against the published requirements. The review should identify what can be retained and where controls, responsibilities or evidence need attention.
Can we transition ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 together?
You can coordinate shared work such as audits, document updates and management review. Discuss a combined assessment with your certification body and plan around the earlier ISO 14001 deadline.
